Can You Be More Than One Interior Design or Decorating Style? Absolutely.

If you’ve ever looked around your home and thought, “I love clean lines… but I also love cozy textures,” you’re not alone. Most homeowners aren’t just one interior design or decorating style — and that’s not a problem. It’s what makes your space personal.
At Ldesigns Interiors, I see this every day. A client might love the timeless feel of Traditional design, but also be drawn to the simplicity of Modern. Or they’ll have a beautifully classic home in Vaughan but want to add some of the clean, fresh touches they’ve seen in newer Toronto builds.
And that’s perfectly normal. In fact — it’s where the most interesting design stories begin.

The One-Style-Only Myth for an interior design or decorating style
Somewhere along the way, we were told that our homes have to fit neatly into one box — “Modern,” “Farmhouse,” “Traditional,” or “Coastal.” But real homes (and real people) rarely work that way.
Your home is a reflection of you — and most of us have a layered sense of style shaped by experiences, travels, and memories. The goal isn’t to pick one look forever; it’s to create a space that feels natural, balanced, and completely yours.
“You don’t have to fit into one style box — great design helps connect all the styles you love.”
How I Help Clients Discover Their Blend
When clients tell me they aren’t sure what their style is, I start with curiosity — not categories.
Before our consultation, I ask them to send me three to five inspiration photos of rooms or spaces they’re drawn to. During our meeting, we talk through what they love about each — the colour palette, the layout, the feeling.
Then, I take a look around their home to see which pieces or finishes they already love. Maybe it’s a vintage table with character or the clean simplicity of their kitchen cabinetry.
Those clues reveal a pattern — what I call a dominant style (the one they’ve loved the longest) and a secondary style that brings personality and contrast.
Sometimes clients realize their mix is Transitional + Modern; other times it’s Traditional + Contemporary. Once they see their preferences side by side, the blend feels obvious — and exciting.
“It’s not about changing what you love — it’s about connecting it all together.”
Why Being a Blend Is a Strength
Blended styles often feel the most authentic. They make a home feel lived in and layered — not staged or one-note.
Toronto and GTA homeowners, especially, see this in action every day. Many homes here have a mix of architectural styles — an older base with newer finishes, or modern condos filled with heirloom pieces.
A blended style allows you to honour what’s already there while bringing in what feels current. It’s a balance between character and clarity — and it’s exactly what makes your space stand out.
How to Make Your Mix Feel Cohesive
If you know you’re drawn to more than one style, here are a few designer-approved ways to make it work:
Start with your dominant style. Let it guide major elements like flooring, cabinetry, and lighting.
Layer your secondary style intentionally. Use it for accent furniture, art, or décor details.
Repeat colours or finishes. This creates connection between different pieces and prevents a “mismatched” look.
Keep scale and proportion consistent. A balanced mix feels cohesive even when styles differ.
Edit with intention. Not everything needs to be bold — simplicity gives contrast room to shine.
If you’d like help discovering your unique mix, stay tuned — our Ldesigns Interiors Style Quiz (coming soon!) will help you identify your dominant and secondary styles.
So yes — you absolutely can be more than one interior design style. In fact, that’s where the magic happens.
Your home doesn’t have to follow a rulebook. It just needs to reflect who you are — the textures you love, the colours that make you happy, and the pieces that tell your story.
“Your design style isn’t a label — it’s a reflection of you.”
