How to Find Your Interior Design Style
One of the questions I hear most often from clients is: “How do I figure out my design style?”
And I get it—there’s so much inspiration out there on Pinterest, Instagram, and in magazines that it can feel overwhelming. You see a sleek modern kitchen one moment, and then a cozy, layered living room the next… and suddenly, you’re not sure what direction to take.
Here’s the good news: you don’t need to fit into a perfect box. Your style doesn’t have to be 100% “Scandinavian” or “Traditional.” In fact, most of us naturally lean toward a blend. The key is uncovering what you love, and that’s exactly what I help my clients do at Ldesigns Interiors.
Today, I want to share a few simple steps you can try at home to start discovering your unique interior design style.

Step 1: Collect What Inspires You
Start by saving images of spaces you love—whether that’s from Pinterest, magazines, or even a favourite restaurant or boutique. Don’t worry about labels. Just go with your gut and save whatever makes you pause and think, “Yes, I love this.”
Step 2: Look for Patterns
Once you’ve got a collection, flip through it. Do you see a lot of clean lines and light woods? Or maybe rich colours and bold patterns? Those repeats are little clues pointing you toward your style.
Step 3: Define the Mood
I always ask clients: “How do you want this space to feel?” That answer is just as important as the look. Maybe you want light and airy, or warm and cozy, or sleek and modern. Your mood words will guide every choice you make.
Step 4: Work With Your Home, Not Against It
If you live in a modern condo, minimalism or contemporary design may feel natural. If you’re in a century home, traditional elements might work beautifully with the architecture. I find the most timeless designs happen when we let the bones of the home lead the way.

Step 5: Pay Attention to Colours & Materials
Ask yourself what colours and textures you love living with. Do you prefer neutrals, or are you drawn to bold jewel tones? Do you gravitate to natural woods, polished metals, or soft linens? These preferences often define your style more than you realize.
Step 6: Start Small & Experiment
If you’re still unsure, start with something simple: swap out accessories, paint an accent wall, or try a new lighting fixture. Live with it for a while and see how it feels. That’s how many of my consultation clients gain confidence in their choices.
Step 7: Give Your Style a Name
Once you’ve spotted the patterns, describe your style in your own words. It might be:
• “Contemporary with warm woods and organic textures.”
• “Classic with a touch of modern lighting.”
• “Minimal with global accents.”
Having this language makes it so much easier to stay consistent when shopping, decorating, or working with a designer.
Finding your interior design style is less about putting yourself in a category, and more about creating a home that feels authentic to you. Your style will evolve over time, and that’s part of the fun.
If you’re still feeling stuck, that’s where I can help. At Ldesigns Interiors, I work with homeowners in Toronto, Oakville, Etobicoke, and across the GTA to bring out their unique style—whether it’s for a renovation, a new build, or simply refreshing a space you already love.
